City and regional transit authorities saw dramatic changes in ridership early in the COVID-19 pandemic. In March 2020, Chicago's Regional Transit Authority needed to track the pandemic’s impact on ridership across the Chicago area, including trains and busses. These impacts (ridership and fares) needed to be shared with local and state policymakers and the public in order to best meet the rapidly changing transit needs while prioritizing health and safety. The RTA team created a dashboard that shows ridership over time by mode of transit, as well as revenues (including sales tax), and average weekday ridership. The dashboard pulled data from 2019 in order to compare changes before and during the pandemic.

Stats

Dataset(s): Regional Transit Authority datasets on farebox revenues, daily ridership count, sales tax revenue. Data from Chicago Transit Authority, Metra (trains), and Pace (buses).
