Atlanta Awake

Awake: This map visualizes opening hours for businesses in Atlanta over a full day. It helps us to identify patterns of activity and centers of commerce. Cities keep time, and like most living organisms they behave in circadian cycles. In each hour of the day, different activities occur in different areas in the city in a constant process of expansion and compression. These patterns of change represent our collective division of the day, and reflect how we associate activities with time and location. The data extraction, API consumption and geolocation for streets and boundaries was written in Python, and the visualization was written in JavaScript and D3. We used the Factual Places API to query for businesses and services and their opening hours within the city's boundaries. The street grid was filtered down to show streets that were more active throughout the day.
